The Different Massage Techniques Available at a Spa

Massage is one of the most natural methods of healing and stress relief. While many people choose to reduce stress with prescription medications, many others visit a day spa weekly in order to relax after a hard week at work. Additionally, massage can also be very healing. Many athletes undergo massage treatment for sore muscles, twisted ankles, and torn ligaments.

All day spas offer massage treatment. However, not all offer a wide variety of massage types. This article explains the different massage techniques available at different spas:

Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage is meant to relieve muscle tension and loosen sore joints. It is performed over the entire body. There are five major strokes used in Swedish massage. The first is effleurage, or stroking. The second is petrissage. This is a grabbing and lifting of the muscles. The third is friction. This is where the massage therapist massages the thickest parts of muscles by working their fingers and thumbs in a circular motion. The fourth is tapotement, or tapping and chopping strokes. The final major stroke used in Swedish massage is vibration. This is where the massage therapist flattens their fingers on a muscle and then shakes rapidly in order to create a vibration.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that targets the parts of muscle that lie far below the surface. All muscles in the human body have many layers, and the lower levels cannot be reached by normal massage techniques. Deep tissue massage therapists use their fingers, thumbs, and, occasionally, elbows to reach the deepest layers of muscle. Deep tissue massage generally involves quite a bit of pressure and friction.

Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular massage is a form of deep tissue massage that is used to increase the blood flow in individual muscles, release pressure on nerves, and reduce pain. Neuromuscular massage therapists search for knots in muscle that can cause pain not only in that individual muscle but also in other unrelated parts of the body.

Sports Massage

A sports massage is not only used to relieve pain -- it is commonly used to prepare muscles prior to activity. Using techniques comparable to that of a Swedish massage, a sports massage can prepare muscles for activity and heighten an athlete's energy. After activity, a sports massage can cool muscles and prevent injury.

Rolfing

Rolfing is a massage technique designed to restore a person's posture. Rolfing massage therapists use their hands and elbows to massage the connective tissue that surrounds muscles. The end result is a noticeable improvement in posture.

Hellerwork

Hellerwork is a massage technique that expands on the posture improvement offered through Rolfing. In addition to improving posture, Hellerwork uses techniques that educate a person's body on breaking bad posture habits. Many claim that persons who have undergone the eleven-week Helenwork session have even noticed an extension of their height.

Lomi Lomi

Lomi Lomi is the most common stress-relieving massage technique. Lomi Lomi massage therapists use large, broad strokes, often with hands, forearms, and elbows. Often, Lomi Lomi massage therapists say a prayer before beginning the massage that addresses the type of healing the patient is hoping for.

Thai Massage

Thai massage is different European massage techniques in that it focuses on circulation and pressure points. Thai massage promotes internal health and muscle flexibility through peripheral stimulation. Thai massage therapists use their hands, elbows, knees and feet.

Shiatsu

A Shiatsu massage consists of a finger-pressure technique that utilizes acupuncture points. Shiatsu massage is performed with the client in a reclined position. The massage therapist then applies varying degrees of pressure with their fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows or knees. Shiatsu treatment relaxes the body while stimulating blood circulation and lymphatic flow.

The massage techniques listed above are the most common forms of massage offered at day spas. However, there are many other massage techniques, and many go by alternate names. To determine what massage technique is best for your needs, discuss what you're looking for in your massage treatment with your spa of choice.

Massage Your Way To More Shapely Breasts

Massages may very well be man's greatest invention in terms of the wonders they do to the body. Aches and pains on any part of the body can be erased by massaging the sore spots. They also contribute to relaxation and inner peace.

Recently, another kind of massage is making waves. Breast enhancement massages are coming into the picture, with its toning and shaping effect on the bust line. Furthermore, regularly massaging the breasts can provide an early warning against abnormal growth that may be present in the breasts. Breast enhancement massages are natural, free, and you can do it on your own. Aside from stimulating growth in breast tissues, it also has tremendous health benefits.

Some believe that massaging the breasts can wash the lymphatic system and flush out the toxins that the body is exposed to. Because breasts are often covered by bras, there is no way that the skin can be stimulated into expelling pollutants on their own.

In Asia, breast massage has been used by many women after having mastectomies or lumpectomies. They found that it improved tissue growth, thereby developing the shape, size, and overall appearance of their breasts. Add that to the sense of well-being and serenity that a massage can give you.

Here's how to do it: lay on your back and make sure you're comfortable. Put light to moderate pressure on your fingers as you work around your breast while your other arm serves as a pillow for your head, as in a breast exam. But be careful: too much pressure can be painful. Allot some time for it to be done several times a day, every day as part of your breast care ritual.

Massaging your breasts is a healthy, natural, and safe alternative to surgical procedures. If you make it a key part of your daily health care regimen, you will be able to gain the benefits of having a healthy body, plus better breast appearance.

Spa Protocol 101: Massage Virgin

Your First Time

It's your first time at a spa. You're nervous, shy and curious; a little embarrassed to be bare-assed. If this sounds like you, you're a spa virgin. But rest assured, your first time getting a massage will be handled by professionals who quite literally put you into their hands.

Unsure about massage-etiquette, your first step should be to arrive at the spa on-time or somewhat early. As you check-in for your massage you will most likely be issued a robe and directed to a changing area. Undress completely, or if modesty doesn't permit, leave your panties on. As you settle down on the massage table, your therapist will keep your body draped under a sheet.

Mmmm...Oooh...Spaaaah

The room will be dimly lit and the sheet will only be moved to expose the area being worked. The massage therapist will ask general questions to allow you to receive the most from the session. Give feedback. If something is uncomfortable or hurts, if you're too hot or too cold, if there's a specific area that needs attention speak up. But most importantly relax, close your eyes, let your mind wander and allow someone else to take care of you.

Basking in the Afterglow

All good things must come to an end. After your massage, you'll emerge from the spa relaxed, peaceful, a little less tense but perhaps somewhat light headed. It's a good idea to drink lots of water following the massage to help remove the released waste and toxins. But now what? Chances are you're thinking about when you can do this again. Take this time to book another massage appointment at the spa. Whether its next week, next month, or six months from now you're more apt to keep an appointment if you make one right away. Though up to your discretion, tipping is always appreciated. If you enjoyed your massage and therapist, the general rule of thumb is 10-15% of the cost of the session.

And finally, don't go right home. Prolong that loosey-goosey, just-had-a-massage, feeling by spending some more quality time alone. Go window shopping, stop for some tea or simply drive the real, long way home listening to your favorite CD. Not a bad ending for your first time.

9 Key Questions For Finding a Hot Stones Massage Therapist

What do you as a customer want? Research shows that the formula is simpler than we might expect: low prices and good customer service. Price wars often cause a back-and-forth volleying between companies, about who can claim the lowest prices in town. So customer service typically becomes the key. We enjoy a tasty restaurant meal less, if we must wait an hour for it to be served. We lose trust in Laundromats that refuse to compensate us after ruining our favorite clothes, with huge bleach spots. And learning that the warranties for our electronics or appliances will not be honored, due to some fine print that requires a magnifying glass to read-can be devastating. Like other goods and services, how can we find the best prices and services for massages with hot stones?

Dollars and sense
As customers, we are typically satisfied when we feel that there is value in our purchases. From hamburgers to houses, if we feel that we got a "square deal," then the price is not an issue, per say. That said, we work hard to earn a living. Even if a good or service is a good deal, we may not have the cabbage, lettuce, cheese or dough (translation: money) to buy it.

How much should a massage with hot stones cost? It depends. Factors such as the location, demand, type of therapeutic massages offered, and a therapist's experience, can influence the cost. For example, prices tend to be lower in rural areas than in metropolitan ones. Also, day spas often offer more services (i.e. manicures, pedicures, facials, etc.), so their rates tend to be higher. You can also look for special deals for therapeutic massages. For example, some spas offer discounts for first-time customers, or for a package of massage sessions.

If you are satisfied with the massage, pay a little extra amount, or give the massage therapist a tip. I am a firm believer that competition breeds excellence, so I tip big if a therapeutic massage was relaxing.

Customer service is king
That brings us to the second important aspect of a massage with hot stones: customer service. The medical profession has recently been rediscovering and promoting an ancient form of stress-reduction: heat therapy. Massages such as those with hot rocks, have proven to reduce muscle tension, boost blood circulation, reduce heart rates, and improve one's overall moods.

Asking the right questions
When searching for an excellent therapist for a therapeutic massage, learn the answers to these questions:

• Which certifications do you have?

• How much have you been trained?

• How long have you been giving therapeutic massages?

• What types of massages do you specialize in?

• Do you have personal references?

• What types of products do you use, and can I buy them?

• How long is the massage session?

• Can I make appointments?

• Do you have discounts for referrals?

A "good" massage
You should consider several issues after receiving a therapeutic massage with a hot stone kit. For example, do you feel better? Also, were you satisfied with the therapist's personal techniques? Each therapist has his or her own "touch." Next, does your personality fit relatively well with the therapist? For instance, if you are a reserved person, you may feel uncomfortable with a therapist who is more talkative. Finally, did the therapist create a sense of trust? As with any other relationship, trust between the massage therapist and patient is vital.

"The customer is always right." We have heard that saying time and time again, but it still holds true. When searching for a therapist for a therapeutic hot stone massage, customer service and competitive prices are the keys to customer satisfaction. You work hard for the money, so you deserve to be treated rightly.
