Aromatherapy has been used throughout the ages as a means of healing both physical and emotional ailments. The sense of smell and the inhalation of certain scents can alter ones mood and promote relaxation by affecting the chemical balance in the brain and causing one to become more relaxed.

Aromatherapy has taken on a whole new dimension and has become a billion dollar industry. There are many forms of aromatherapy including candles, lotions, incense, massage oils, etc. Becoming increasingly popular these days are reed diffusers.

Reed diffusers are very simple to use and provide wonderful long-lasting aromas that fill your home with calming and familiar scents. Diffusers are primarily made up of a glass container, a scented oil mixture and a handful of rattan reeds. The glass bottle holds the scented oil mixture which is primarily made up of a diffuser base mixed with fragrance or essential oils. After you have poured the scented oil into your glass container, (a glass bottle, jar or vase for example) you insert the rattan reeds into the oil and you are all set to go ! Reed diffuser oils last a very long time. Quality oils from a respected supplier should last (approximately) 1 month per ounce. This may vary a little due to enviromental conditions. (Fan on, air conditioning or heat on, doors open, humidifiers, etc.)

Diffusers work by diffusing the scent into the air through the reeds. Rattan reeds are made up of "channels". There are approximately 20 channels in every reed. The channels basically "suck up" the oil much like a straw. When the oils reach the tops of the reeds (usually within 12-24 hours) the scent is diffused naturally into the air. This provides a stable, steady scent that is long lasting.The number of reeds you use is based on your personal preferences. The more reeds you use, the stronger the scent. Usually this is between 6 and 10 reeds. If you notice your scent is starting to weaken, flip the reeds. Carefully take the reeds out of the bottle and flip them upside down. This will expose the ends that were sitting in the oil to now be exposed to the air releasing more scent. After some time of course, reeds can become clogged with dust or become overly saturated. In this case, simply discard the reeds and insert new ones.

When choosing a reed diffuser to purchase, it is important to find a supplier that uses a quality base and undiluted fragrance or essential oils. Many bases on the market today contain a large amount of alcohol in their bases. Alcohol is highly flammable and causes the fragrance or essential oils to evaporate too quickly into the air. This forces you to have to purchase more oil in a shorter amount of time and often lines the pockets of suppliers out to make big bucks from your oil refill purchases. Another ingredient often used by manufacturers or suppliers is dipropylene glycol. (Often referred to as DPG). Dipropylene glycol is a dilutent used to "cut" fragrance oils. It can often weaken the scent and is a little too thick to properly wick up to the top of the reeds. When choosing a supplier, make sure the base or oils that they offer do not contain alcohol or DPG. (Dipropylene glycol).

Another thing to consider when purchasing a diffuser are the reeds that are offered. You must use rattan reeds. There is a lot of misinformation, especially on the internet, in regards to reeds. Some suppliers say their reeds are made from bamboo. Bamboo reeds will not work as bamboo chutes contain nodes, not channels, and will not wick up properly. I even saw an article in a popular woman's magazine recently that suggested making your own diffuser using bamboo skewers. Skewers are not meant to be used in reed diffusers. If a supplier is telling you the reeds are bamboo, find another supplier as they do not know enough about reed diffusers to be selling them in the first place. Again, make sure the reeds are made of rattan.


Reed diffusers are a safer alternative than candles as there is no risk of fire and no dirty soot that ends up on your furniture. You should still use caution and keep safety first when using any product, including reed diffusers. Be careful not to tip diffusers over and use care when flipping the reeds as oils can damage delicate surfaces. Reed diffusers oils are not meant for use on the skin and as good as they smell, you simply shouldn't eat them !

What's Good About The Human Touch HT 1650 Massage Chair And What's Not

The HT 1650 Human Touch Massage Chair is the only chair on the market with a fully retractable footrest massager. It comes with a host of features and is upholstered in beautiful leather. However, for its expensive price tag it does lack certain features found on other chairs costing the same or less.

I like the HT 1650, I have to admit, but I'm a little disappointed with it as well. I'll start by describing what I like about it and then talk a little on features that I find a little sub par.

First off, the chair looks great. At first glance you'd think you were looking at a big leather armchair - and a very beautiful one at that. It's upholstered in uncorrected, top-grain Anilin-dyed leather that looks sumptuous and inviting. There's no metal rails, mounted control panel, cabling or anything else to give away its secret. Even the full foot and calf massager is retracted fully under the seat and sequestered away.

The remote control is easy to use and allows you to control the Acupoint Detection, massage intensity control, lumbar heaters, electric recline, electric footrest deploy, and countdown timer. There's also an onboard convenience outlet so you plug in your phone, mp3 or whatever. There are 8 massage programs: Sore Muscle Relief, Sports & Back Therapy, Leg/Foot/Hip Therapy, Neck/Shoulders Relief, After Work Stretch, Morning Energize, Night time Soothing, and Auto Demo. There are also a number of manual options.

The lumbar heaters work just fine, the seat padding is made from viscoelastic (memory foam that moulds itself to your exact shape) and there's vibration in the armrests. The chair has a clever Acupoint Detection system that locates your acupressure points and automatically adjusts the roller for a more effect massage. The massage modes are: Kneading, Compression, Percussion, Kneading/Percussion, Rolling full, and Rolling Zone - all come with 2 speed options. There's also an Air Massage in the seat area giving you analogue pressure pointing with pulsing force.

The HT 1650 chair gives a great massage and can claim to be one of the best shiatsu massage chairs on the market today. However, there are some things with it that disappoint.

The massage from the foot massager is below par for me and I would expect better from a chair costing around $4,800. While the massager does have 3 speeds and 2 programs, it uses integrated wave vibration. There are other chairs on the market that offer more than simple air massages for the foot area. Perhaps, being fully retractable necessitated in a simpler form of massage device?

The neck and shoulder relief massage of a chair of this quality and price could be better - it's no match for the GK (grip and knead) roller system you get with a Sanyo massage chair.

In conclusion I think the Human Touch HT 1650 massage chair will appeal to those who want a good shiatsu massage chair that also looks beautiful. However, for those who appreciate function over form, there are other, better models of chairs on offer.

The modes include shiatsu, kneading, tapping, wavelet (alternating strokes along the back that press on both spinal muscles and spinal joint areas), pummel and rhythm. In addition there are three special massage modes. The Point massage uses rolling, kneading, pushing or tapping massage to continuously massage a particular point along the spine. The Moving massage, as the name implies, moves along the spine. The Auto Massage mode offers a complete 20 minute massage using all massage modes. There are also 4 easy to use healthcare auto programs.

The chair also has air bags in the thigh and buttock sections to help alleviate lower body stiffness.

All in all, the chair is very impressive and is definitely one of the best robotic massage chairs you can buy at this price. However, there are 2 points that the chair does disappoint.

It has power recline but it doesn't feature a push once system, which means you have to continuously keep it pressed until it reaches its maximum reclined position at 170 degrees. This is probably okay for most, but for those with a short reach it means they will have to remain seated until the chair is fully reclined before they can then lie down.

Secondly, the chair boasts a music therapy system. All this entails is that it allows you to plug in your own mp3 to listen to music. The chair comes with remote control stand, headphones, speaker, Mp3 Player, and USB flash drive. It should not be confused with the music therapy system you get with either an Inada or OSIM massage chair. These chairs let the music determine the type of massage given; rock music for a very physical massage or soothing classical for a soothing one. This is very sophisticated technology and is much more than what is on offer with the Fujikura 2000. However, this technology doesn't come cheap; you would pay thousands more for one of these chairs.

Despite these minor complaints, the model 2000 massage chair by Fujikura is a very good option and represents fantastic value for money and it gets very high ratings from just about every customer review.
